Whoop-Up Drive is one of the busiest ways in and out of West Lethbridge, and in winter, the hill down into the river valley can look very different from what you see in your driveway.

That’s why the Whoop-Up Drive camera has been running since 2012. A quick look before you leave tells you more than any forecast can.

What to look for on the camera

  • Road surface: is it bare and dry, wet and shiny, or white? A shiny road on a cold morning often means ice.
  • Traffic: are vehicles moving normally, or creeping along with long gaps?
  • Visibility: fog and blowing snow often settle in the river valley first.
  • The sky: low cloud, snow bands or a chinook arch to the west tell you what’s coming.

Pair it with the live readings

  • Temperature near or just below 0°C plus a wet-looking road is the classic black ice setup.
  • Strong west or southwest gusts can blow snow across the road even when it isn’t snowing.
  • A falling temperature in the late afternoon after a chinook means a refreeze is on the way.

Bookmark the camera page on your phone and give it a quick check before your morning drive this winter.
